A Memorial Day Lesson: The Travis Manion Foundation

We all enjoy a day off from work and the chance to spend time with family and friends, but for Memorial Day in particular, I’ve always felt it’s important to take a moment to reflect on what this holiday means.

That’s why I wanted to share a few words about the Travis Manion Foundation. Travis Manion served as a First Lieutenant in the Marines during the Iraq War. While on a tour of duty in 2007, Travis and his team were ambushed as they searched a house for insurgents. Travis led the counterattack and was ultimately shot and killed by an enemy sniper. Thanks to Travis’s bravery, his entire patrol team managed to survive the attack.

These days, Travis’s memory and morals live on through the foundation, which works to empower and strengthen veterans and the families of fallen soldiers. The Travis Manion Foundation, headquartered in Doylestown, PA, organizes an impressive number of different initiatives, ranging from food drives to youth mentorship programs to beautifying the tombs of fallen soldiers every Memorial Day.

When I think of Travis — and all of the brave men and women who have given their lives for our country — the word I keep coming back to is “selfless.” Serving in the military is honorable, and it takes a special kind of person to dedicate their life to securing and upholding our freedoms.

We could all stand to be a little more like Travis in our daily lives: brave, generous, and willing to make sacrifices for others. These are important universal values, and I believe that if each one of us works to live a little more like Travis did, we can help make the world a kinder, more peaceful place. If you’re interested in donating to or volunteering with the Travis Manion Foundation, you can learn more on their website.

This Memorial Day, all of us at Concentus pause to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. We hope you’ll join us in remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom.

About VALUABLES

Many financial advisors focus on communicating with clients to provide complex analysis of the investment markets and economies. However, we have learned that most clients are not particularly interested in this complex analysis. Most clients hire an advisor for their knowledge of the markets, not for their ability to explain that knowledge. Most want to know what time it is, not how to build a watch.

Experience has taught us that wealthy families care most about using their wealth as a means to a desirable end, which is to achieve a more satisfying, fulfilled and impactful life, and to fulfill their most important Life Values.

VALUABLES is a periodic article series focused on the concepts, systems, and habits which we have observed among families who have been successful in this quest to use their wealth as a tool to live a life of significance. The most successful families share a set of habits, systems, and insights which enable them to use their wealth as a tool to fulfill their Values and what is most important to them.

We named this article series VALUABLES, because it provides an exploration of those habits, systems, and insights. We hope it will help you to consider your assets and possessions which are most valuable to you, and how you can use your financial wealth to enhance and cultivate your true “Valuables”.
