Tariffs and the Great Depression
As every investor knows, the White House’s tariff policy has been dominating the news lately and has caused considerable equity market volatility.
Recently, I’ve noticed that the financial media has been paying a lot of attention to how the current tariff policy compares to another infamous legislation in American history, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Because that legislation is often remembered as one of the causes of the Great Depression, this comparison can certainly bring about some fearful emotions.
