“Now and then, it is a good idea to take a break from the constant pursuit of happiness, to just… BE happy.”
– Dan Sullivan

The Pursuit of Happiness

I love this quote from Dan Sullivan, and have it taped to my computer monitor at work. It seems like so many people are running so hard to achieve the things they believe will make them happy.

In particular, since most of us naturally equate happiness with more career success and more money, everyone you meet seems in such a crazed rush to push themselves harder, to make more money, and to accumulate more wealth so that they can finally be happy.

This quote challenges us to think about how we are defining our happiness, and if it is possible that our constant pursuit of “success” is leaving us no time or energy to actually just…. BE happy.

Do we have it backwards?

As a financial advisor, my job is to counsel clients about methods and strategies to help them build more financial wealth, so that they can be happier. However, it is important to remember that the ultimate goal is to achieve happiness, and the ultimate “wealth” lies in our ability to live a happy life. Sometimes we have a tendency to get things backwards, as Sean Achor tells us in this amazing talk on the subject of being happy.
